    You see that shitty totally selfish behavior everywhere. The same type of person who would crash down a streambed in a truck races intentionally loud cars through otherwise quiet and peaceful neighborhoods.....or, leaves beer bottles and potato chip bags at a beautiful park....or is inches from your rear bumper at 70 mph because they want to go faster. It's millions of people who believe that by virtue of the fact that they CAN do something....they SHOULD do it.....without a moment's thought of how their actions impact others. But, its a tragedy of the commons. The same assholes driving down that streambed today....wont be able to do so in another ten years, once that resource is so damaged and degraded by their present actions.

    Those of you defending the trail riders, that they have as much right as the fly fishers....are making the usual weak false equivalence argument. Fly fishers must have clean, healthy trout habitat in order to enjoy their sport and passion. These environments are, sadly, few and far between. The trail riders, in comparison, can enjoy their sport at a much wider range of locations. Its not so much a question of legality, as it is just plain bad manners and lack of consideration. Dave and Amelia have to be somewhere on the water. The dirt bikers dont.

    Fabulous footage of that brown foraging. Question. I see that you Jensens favor the Orvis backpack. But, isn't that inconvenient when it comes to changing flies etc? With a slingpack, I can access my bag while wading, but I don't see how you can do that with the backpack. ?? Thanks!

    There is a big difference between using a streambed as a trail and using a stream for a crossing for a motor trail where necessary. At least you did not have to endure any air boats which you occasionally run into in the streams where I fish.

    Clare and I feel your pain, Dave and Amelia. Surprised you fished on a such a busy day. Having fished there for years we have noticed a marked increase in recreational vehicle use, probably coinciding with the increase in population in the general area. We only fish that area in the first month or so of the season and never on weekends or public holidays. In saying that this river has had 4WD's since I can remember even back in the early 70's, just not on this scale. Brilliant video, some lovely fish caught. Looking forward to the new season. Hopefully there are some good flushes during the winter.

    • @jensenflyfishing
      @jensenflyfishing 12 годин тому

      I was hoping to see you on here :) It was a very deliberate choice to go in to that water when we did. We actually wanted to do a video with real results that essentially says "hey, the conflict is in our heads with how we perceive the motorized users" and the results of the fishing really spell it out - if you give it time and poke about the fish are still the and active. We do the same and there are actually a couple of videos to come from pre-willow removal that feature the best fishing we had... from 3.5+m3sec flows, which seems to be about the flows that the motorheads start to really get in there. And to your point, it's a long history of users, they aren't just this lower bit, the mouth of the gorge a serious problem, and again... it's up to us to choose to or not fish there and how we conduct our minds and ourselves with others. A really neat opportunity to share. All this and yeah, we're foreigners with no voice. At the end of the day there is a great discussion to be had about trout being there, irrigation withdrawals for ag/vineyards, motorized use and if humanity has crossed the threshold on use of that creek... to wit we could then look at the rest of that and other similar regions. But, again, foreigners ;) :)

    • @jensenflyfishing
      @jensenflyfishing 19 годин тому

      Oh, most countries it's not allowed. There has to be political will to enforce that common sense regulation, mind you. Using a riverbed as a motorhead track makes zero sense until you zoom out to the bigger picture of that stream, how a country's region dries up, how agriculture wins the day. Beyond the real point of the video there's an interesting conversation/discussion to be had here given that creek often dries up completely late summer.

  • @zombierider2794
    @zombierider2794 20 годин тому

    Some people evidently don't realize that what you're piffed about is how the 4x4's shred the riverbeds to pieces. Maybe you could talk about how motorized vehicles destroy the streams and kill fish and the whole river ecosystem? Good for you for standing your ground and saying something to the motorbiker in a non-confrontational way. Like dude, we are fishing here. It's super lame to run your motorcycle through the stream and ruin YOUR day vs his.

    • @jensenflyfishing
      @jensenflyfishing 20 годин тому

      Good point and something to consider moving forward in a different video. We really wanted to make a video that has an underlying pushback against the often self-righteous fly fishing purist that projects things have to be "just so" or otherwise the day is ruined. This video is intended to be exactly that - just because the worst case scenario happens, we can still get past ourselves and enjoy our day :)

    • @tylerspri
      @tylerspri 19 годин тому

      How much silt is stirred up by folks walking in the water (in this video theres examples)? The micro plastics introduce from fishing tackle, waders, boots...the physical damage to the fish? Going the eco argument is damaging to both sports. Both are guilty. Just in different manners. Both also go to great lengths to protect their cherished resources. Hikers could fight the fight to get fishing shut down, I've seen it happen. All groups have equal access and should work together. Instead of viewing their desired usage as superior and every one else a nuisance.

    • @zombierider2794

      @@tylerspri comparing 4x4 trail damage to hiker trail damage is like comparing a wound from a Shotgun to a BB gun wound.

    • @tylerspri
      @tylerspri 17 годин тому

      @zombierider2794 Clearly someone fishing in the stream does not stir up as much silt as a group of quads. But that does not matter to those that would deny us our access. They come for mine then they'll come for yours. I've seen it happen. Hikers got fisherman access denied locally to some public ponds. So for the various groups to bicker and point fingers and act like they have the morally higher ground will only end poorly for all involved. Especially since no group is as innocent as they feel they are.

    • @jensenflyfishing

      @@tylerspri It's funny because I was the initial chair of the proposed BigHorn Wildland Coalition to create a wildland Park in central Alberta nearly 30 years ago - we had a LOT of support and agreement. The stumbling block... motorized vs non-motorized users. And the motorized user group argued the same thing then as you are here now. The funky part is that the position isn't wrong, it is misplaced - please realize I'm about to agree with all of what you say with an asterix, and that asterix is essentially the ticking clock of time. To explain - NOBODY can argue that the impact on a stream with motorized machinery isn't heavy and immediate. Add the volume of motorized users here and you get some severe impact. I think the point you're missing is the totality of impact of one machine vs other users. That's non-arguable. HOWEVER, to your point, and I agree 100%, eventually as the volumes of non-motorized users - horses, walkers, mountain bikes, etc gains volume and traction, eventually those culminate to also have a net negative impact. It doesn't matter how much BEYOND the threshold human use impact is, once it is past acceptable limits, it's past it. As we see with hiking trails in the alpine or the poppy trampling Instagram chasers, or the Roy's Peak phenomenon near Wanaka or... on and on it goes, the ticking time bomb of eventuality is that it's all beyond what is the threshold. Motorized users as they are doing here is immediately at that threshold... but is it past it? Given the creek dries up most summers, given that the irrigation use for vineyards and agriculture suck the life out of it, given that the brown trout are non-native yet somehow manage to exist through it all... does any of this matter in this location anyway? This one really challenges me personally on the environmental side of things but even I'm faced with shrugging and saying "it it what it is" and can choose to fish here or not. That's why we didn't focus on THAT angle of things in this video and used it to look at our own minds and how we perceive the inherent conflict of being literally run over vs staying the course and finding the magic in even the most impossible of locations. THAT's why we designed the video as we did, THAT's why we lead people in the way we did with title and thumbnail... to get people to understand that even in the worst projection of conflict that we CAN find solace, find some magic, find our enjoyment despite being embedded into what we would call our worst case scenario. And we pulled it all off, kept our heads, found some magic and can share. Hopefully you get the totality of things.

    They have just as much right to be there as you do. In fact it could be argued that you are disturbing them. As someone in both sports I'm tired of everyone thinking their hobby is better and deserves priority over someone else's. I'll be unsubscribing due to the pretentious assumption that your public access is more important than someone else's. Don't wanna deal with motorbikes then quit fishing moto trails. I don't complain about folks on walking trails around the local ponds.

    • @KrohnJ
      @KrohnJ 20 годин тому

      Absolutely thoughtless comment. The vehicles completely destroy the gravel bed and that is especially important during the spawning season. Incidentally, the gravel itself is also a habitat for other creatures, there are not only fish living in the water, or what do you "believe"? I call it "believe" because you seem to have little knowledge. I think you are a top fisherman, certainly with good handling of the animals. Go into the forest and play with a bear. Servus

    • @tylerspri
      @tylerspri 20 годин тому

      @@KrohnJas an avid offroader and fly fisherman I can tell you that you and others like you are myopic and self serving. I've seen more wheelers out cleaning trails and servicing the land than I've seen fisherman doing the same. You judge because you don't like. It's that simple Dont forget that it could be argued our fishing is damaging to the wildlife as well. We have targets on our backs as fisherman just like the moto guys do.

      Re: Unsubscribing: Perfect! Clearly you didn't take the time to watch what the video is actually about... going straight in to where other users are going to be annnnd... overcoming our own negative thoughts & projections, overcoming them to have an enjoyable day. Because you didn't take the time, because you didn't ask and because you jumped to projections it's great to hear that you'll be unsubscribing because life's too short to deal with people that do exactly what you just did. Thank you. The irony is that had you watched the video, everything you typed is exactly what we shared. Funny! The one correction I hope you see - a river is not a moto trail. But if you don't know that I encourage you to take a stream ecology 101 course. All the best

    • @zombierider2794

      Dave did not assume that his public access is more important than moto-enthusiasts. He literally said @24:50 "I'm another user of the stream you don't care about us?". This was in response to the dude on the motorbike that was about to ruin the day for another trail user. Moto user did the right thing though and realized Dave was right, he needed to respect other trail users. So you have it ass-backwards man, re-watch the vid and determine for yourself. The pretentious attitude is coming from you it seems.

      @@jensenflyfishingI watched the video. More than once in fact. I'm sorry the comments I've made don't align with your personal beliefs but as someone who's experienced this more than once, I'm tired of seeing the judgement from both sides. This is how land gets shut down for everyone. Not just fisherman and not just offroaders. I made my comments because you opened the video complaining about the riders as an "issue". You set the tone. You opened with judgement. For god's sakes your thumbnail says "motor head hell" and you wonder why people judge? I simply responded.

      It is a real challenge to get past our minds and find the enjoyment / magic of the day when it goes like this, but as we share, if we can get past it there is magic to be found. Now, should a riverbed be a motorhead trail? Well, that's sadly become a global issue, hasn't it? N America, New Zealand, Patagonia... we'd hope we'd be smarter than we are collectively, but...

As Orvis Field testing crew I've had the h4 in hand nearly 2 1/2 years now and honestly moved mostly to it once I got it :) THAT all said the 4wt H3F is perfect for this video situation, water types and fish. My preference is the H4 now as it kicks in a little more backbone than the H3 offered while not losing any flex point or energy to load - in fact it is more efficient and a noticeable touch to spot-on point & shoot. You can't go wrong with either my I'd look at the h4 with an eye to different lines. I use the Hydros Trout DT as we do a LOT of casting in tight where there is less fly line than leader length out of the rod.

    Fishing can be an act capable of connecting us with nature and with our inner self, if you allow yourself to disconnect from your normal life while going fishing this experience can be deeply healing for the mind, and essential for us to see ourselves again as a humble inhabitant of this abundant nature that we have the privilege of contemplating. I love fishing.

    As a lifetime fly fisherman and guide in oregon, you are correct, not many do what you do or can do what you do. This is a graduate school for fly fishers. And this is a masterclass in spot and stalk fly hunting. If i had more then two thumbs those would be up to 👍. A big part of fishing this way is having the right kind of place to fish like this! Never tell anyone where you are I have a spot 15 minutes from my house that i fish 2 or 3 times a year and the fish almost have names at this point. It so rare in the age of social media to have a place like that and i dont tell anyone about it. I dont name it, i dont post pics with that new crap that can find where your at, its just for me. And its truly a little slice of heaven. Im the only one who fishes the creek and the only one who knows what lives in there. And they go to 25-26 and the biggest was 9 lbs. So far......

    • @jensenflyfishing
      @jensenflyfishing 12 днів тому

      Hi, thank you for that. There's really nothing better in life than these moments and unbeknownst to most people they are far more commonly available (not this specific kind of creek, rather, the style of fishing and breakdown) than most think. Allowing time for a stream to unfold, show itself... as you know, it just shows when you allow it and then there's nothing better :) But it's great to have these little spots and yours sound right up our alley and ours right up yours :) The one thing I'll never understand is - the ppl that have to know exactly where you are or even what creek... literally every bank of every stream or river in Alberta has these fish and, more to the point, how is chasing another person's magic in any way, shape or form of value to me if I helicopter myself in just to have a photo with the next person's fish? How does that ever scratch the satisfactory itch? But, 95% do it. If we hear of where someone's magic happened we avoid it altogether or fish it when the opportunity arises to fish with that person. Even at that, once you know, you know, and the world gets a little bit smaller when you do. And knowing in a smaller world leaves less of it to dream about.
